Ice n slice: Yellowknife gets cutting-edge 4G

Ice Wireless, which operates in Canada’s far northern regions – Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut – has launched commercial LTE-Advancedmountainsice (LTE-A) network services, initially in Yellowknife. According to Ice Wireless CEO Samer Bishay, quoted by MobileSyrup, customers can expect real-world LTE-A mobile data speeds of around 40Mbps, whilst he added that the carrier plans to switch on additional LTE-A base stations throughout the summer.

Simultaneously, Ice revamped its post-paid packages, with all smartphone plans now bundling Canadian, US and Mexican roaming at no additional costs (voice/SMS, plus data roaming if the user’s plan includes data). Additionally, Ice’s latest promotion offers unlimited data for CAD89 (USD65) per month, distinguishing it from the three major nationwide cellcos Rogers, Telus and Bell and their sub-brands, with the only other Canadian mobile carrier currently offering an unlimited data plan being regional operator SaskTel. The Ice Wireless CEO added: ‘We are committed to improving our network coverage and accessibility to rural communities.’
